纽扣珊瑚群是一类六放虫（菟海葵），它们是珊瑚和海葵目的亲戚，附着在浅海的岩石或珊瑚礁上。某些品种的纽扣珊瑚会分泌一种剧毒物质——岩沙海葵毒素（水螅毒素）。
基本概况
纽扣珊瑚的色彩可算是最千变万化的——红、橙、黄、绿、青、蓝、紫，几乎什么颜色都有。它们像一朵朵鲜花紧紧地生活在一起，在珊瑚礁上形成一片片五彩斑斓的“花海”。
这种毒素是自然界的第二毒物。1克海葵毒素可以杀死30万只小鼠和80个人。这种毒素可以透过人的皮肤，还会随着温度的变化变成气体，只要很少的量就可能致命，07年，一名美国男子用沸水法清理自家的鱼缸，不小心吸入升腾的岩沙海葵毒素，虽然最后抢救过来，但是仍然留下哮喘的终生疾病。养有纽扣珊瑚的朋友，不管它是否有毒，一定要在接触之后迅速洗手。某些水族馆中也可能会出售有毒的纽扣珊瑚，如果你不懂，千万不要随便尝试养。
水螅毒素
概述
众所周知珊瑚作为刺胞动物门，或多或少都是有毒的。但在水箱里饲养的种类中最危险的当属纽扣珊瑚。水毒素（Palytoxin）（也称砂岩海葵毒素）是目前自然界已知的毒性最强的物质之一，对大鼠致死量不到1微克/千克（毒性在不同动物间致死量有不同），对人类的致死量约在2.3微克到45微克之间。有不少人已将因为处理纽扣珊瑚不当而中招。这种毒素主要存在于一些海葵目、软珊瑚、纽扣珊瑚和水螅之中，是由于某种可能是共生的细菌产生的。它的毒性机理是干扰钠钾离子通道，因为钠钾离子通道所有细胞基本都有（而且都非常重要），所以它可以影响身体中的几乎每种细胞，所以对于各种暴露途径，症状可能会非常不同，主要症状有呼吸困难、肌肉疼痛，或者发热，而且这种症状会持续很多天。症状的发作很快，死的也很快。
一般来说对于人有几种中毒途径：
1、吃受污染的鱼或甲壳亚门产品。
2、吸入含有水螅毒素的蒸气。
3、眼睛或皮肤接触含有水螅毒素的海葵目、珊瑚及其分泌物或受污染的海水。
目前已知这种毒素存在于Palythoa属的纽扣中，彩虹纽扣通常（注意，是通常，有很多特例）属于Zoanthus属，Z属的纽扣目前尚未有剧毒报道。
传说
夏威夷王国岛上的岛民说，毛伊岛上的一个村子被诅咒了。当年村民们藐视鲨鱼神灵，于是被鲨鱼吃掉。活着的村民将鲨鱼捕杀并肢解焚烧，随后将焚烧后的灰烬倒入哈纳镇附近的一个湖中。不久后，一种神秘的海藻在湖中生长。这种海藻被称为“致命的哈纳海藻”（limu-make-o-hana）。如果谁不小心把鱼叉放入这个湖中，然后刺伤人，很快这个人就会被夺去生命。
鲨鱼神灵也许是一个精心编撰的传说故事，到了1961年，菲利普·海尔弗里奇和约翰·舒佩发现了这个传说中的湖泊。在这他们发现了一种新的六放虫，命名为毒性沙海葵目（ Palythoa toxica ）。limu-make-o-Hana 是真的存在，只是并不是一种海藻，而是一种群居的六放虫。
