相对于奥斯卡和格莱美奖，灵魂列车更大的程度上区分了肤色来进行提名。抛开其他因素，灵魂列车在广义上来说是属于黑人自己的格莱美（或者奥斯卡，因为有演员一类奖项）。其影响力，在黑人歌手（艺人）心中自然不言而喻。虽然，进入21世纪以来因为很多原因唱片业遭受打击。在这样的情况下，一股潮流带起的RNB和Rap热潮让业界人士对唱片业又燃起了信心。为了鼓舞更多的歌手以及音乐人创作和推出更有创意的专辑，在随后的几年里开始越来越多的南非白人歌手也荣幸被提名竞争奖项。
早在90年代奖项曾备受不少争议，其中原因是白人对于奖项明显将其肤色排外。官方曾多次向外界示好，并不是奖项有意排除其他人种（肤色）。其实是因为奖项本身是忠于黑人音乐本身，概念完全不同。官方表示，灵魂列车最佳歌手的定义是R\u0026B/灵魂/爵士类歌手被官方认可才会获奖，奖项不存在任何不公平。至此，灵魂列车以鼓舞更多的歌手，希望为R\u0026B/灵魂音乐融入更多新的色彩而做出贡献。
